About The Organization

The Texas Festivals and Events Association (TFEA) is a professional trade association for Texas-based festival and event planners, volunteers, and suppliers. It represents the hundreds of festivals celebrating the history, legends, culture, art, folklore, and natural beauty of the Lone Star State. The TFEA is an International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) affiliate. In addition to the vast benefits and networking opportunities provided by the IFEA, the TFEA runs the Texas Event Management Institute (TEMI) certification program where members learn, grow, and increase professional standards and practices

Position Summary

The TFEA is searching for its next Executive Director (ED). Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED is the driving force behind the association, responsible for its strategic direction and financial sustainability, overseeing all aspects of the organization’s operations. The ED is accountable for advancing TFEA’s mission and providing value to members through its educational programs, meetings, and trade shows. The ED is central to the continued growth and success of TFEA and its ability to support, develop, and promote the festivals and events industry in Texas.

Executive Director Key Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Provide leadership to the organization, setting strategic direction and long-term goals in alignment with the mission and vision.
  • Develop and implement strategies to expand membership, increase engagement, and enhance the organization’s impact and influence.

Financial Management & Resource Development

  • Oversee the association’s finances, developing and implementing budgets, negotiating services and expenses, and ensuring financial sustainability.
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and partners, steward their support, and engage them in the organization’s mission and activities.
  • Secure new sponsorships and manage partner and sponsor relations to achieve financial and marketing goals.

Conference Planning and Educational Programming

  • Plan and activate the TFEA Annual Conference and Tradeshow each year, bringing together industry professionals, to learn, network, and do business.
  • Facilitate the TFEA “Best in Texas” Marketing Awards Program & Competition.
  • Manage the Texas Event Management Institute (TEMI), the professional education certification program for event professionals
  • Organize and execute other educational and networking opportunities for members throughout the year, including “Behind the Scenes” tours, seminars, and other outreach programs.

Advocacy and Communication

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for TFEA, representing the interests of its members to association partners, funders, governments, media, and the public to benefit the industry.
  • Actively engage and energize TFEA members, volunteers, board members, event committees, partner organizations, and funders.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications, from social to web presence to external relations, to create a stronger brand.

Governance & Board Relations

  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; work closely with the Board to ensure effective governance, transparency, accountability, and compliance with legal standards.
  • Seek and build board involvement; strengthen all board meetings, policy compliance, and committee work.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to the Board of Directors.

Organizational Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations, including financial management, staff/volunteer recruitment and management, program development, technology needs, and administration.
  • Lead, motivate, and manage interns, staff, and volunteers.
  • Assist the IFEA in the execution and management of its annual convention and other responsibilities as determined by the President & CEO of the IFEA and approved by the Board

Position Requirements

  • 5+ years of proven leadership and management experience with demonstrated results
  • Proven skills in working with, guiding, and leveraging the talents of volunteer boards of directors
  • Experience with planning events, meetings, conferences, and/or festivals and events; CFEE certification through the IFEA encouraged
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to set and achieve strategic objectives and manage a budget with a working knowledge of QuickBooks
  • Highly functional using technology and databases; able to quickly learn and use multiple technology systems
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience; excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Servant Leader with a passion for the festivals and events industry and proven ability to address organizational challenges, accelerate success, accomplish goals, and drive projects to completion

Position Details

This is a contracted position with a defined annual scope of work to include deliverables and objectives towards the successful activation of the mission and goals of TFEA. The qualified candidate shall be an independent contractor. The location of this position is remote with occasional travel to board meetings, association programs, and conferences. Association offices shall be located in the city of residence of the ED, and all overhead, staff support, and ongoing expenses associated with managing the TFEA shall be the responsibility of the ED and included as part of the independent contractor agreement. The ED must be a Texas resident and have access to adequate space to execute the duties within the Job Description, including internet access, file storage, and a P.O. Box. The successful candidate shall provide a certificate of general liability.

Compensation

Compensation for this position starts at $55,000 a year and is based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, specialized knowledge, and experience.
